WASHINGTON -- Spending by lawmakers on taxpayer-financed trips abroad has risen sharply in recent years, a Wall Street Journal analysis of travel records shows, involving everything from war-zone visits to trips to exotic spots such as the Galápagos Islands.
The spending on overseas travel is up almost tenfold since 1995, and has nearly tripled since 2001, according to the Journal analysis of 60,000 travel records. Hundreds of lawmakers traveled overseas in 2008 at a cost of about $13 million. That's a 50% jump since Democrats took control of Congress two years ago.

This decision is good news, but the case reveals a basic contradiction in the position of the Obama administration with regard to the 1993 law.

One thing is certain as we move into the new biennial budget in New Hampshire: Its success, or failure, rests with the Democrats. They cannot blame the economy, they cannot blame Republicans and they can no longer crow about being the party that best protects middle-class families in New Hampshire.Many Democrats continue to say they prefer an income tax. Yet they flinched at the opportunity to have a proper, thoughtful debate on it, despite having a mandate for change and a solid majority for the second consecutive term. Instead, they enacted a slew of new and expanded taxes and fees that regressively impact working-class individuals and families.

As I impatiently await the downloading and installation of new software, I find myself with pen in hand and a need to get out my fears regarding the future of NH and our country.
Governor Lynch, a congenial man with a delightful smile, has no idea what he is doing, nor any understanding of how he has trampled our state into disrepair. I know he has to follow the powers of the Democrat Party, but to do so at the expense of his conscience. He appears not to have an ounce of regard for the future employment of thousands around the state. Not to flinch when he has just put a yoke around the necks of small business owners is beyond comprehension.

An internal ACORN memo I obtained from August 2008 makes the motives clear: "Over our 38 years, health care organizing has never been a major focus either nationally or locally for ACORN," wrote ACORN Philadelphia regional director Craig Robbins. "But increasingly, ACORN offices around the country are doing work on health care." The goal: "Building ACORN Power."
The memo outlines the ACORN/HCAN partnership and their strategy of opposing any programs that rely on "unregulated private insurance" -- and then parlaying political victory on government-run health care "to move our ACORN agenda (or at least part of it) with key electeds that we might otherwise not be able to pull off."

Sunday, Jun. 21, 2009ALL IT TOOK was some late-night taxing and cutting, and the state got a balanced budget package early Friday.
The joint House and Senate budget committee passed $85 million in tax hikes and enhancements in the space of about two hours late Thursday night.
The budget spends about $11.6 billion overall, but so many changes went through the system late in the process that the Legislative Budget Assistant's office was forced to work into the weekend to finish an analysis. One thing for sure: There's no room for error. Back-of-the-envelope calculations show a projected surplus of $5 million over the two years, well less than one-tenth of a percent.
